Essay --

Danielle C. Dillon Europe in the Middle Ages Fall 2013 Final Exam Many things effected society in Medieval Europe, some having a more profound effect than others. Europe in the Middles ages was a time of learning and of cultural growth, but it was also a time of more serious things such as the Black Death. The way Europe coped with these unforeseen challenges, helped shape their society and culture, and we still learn about them today. The Black Death was of significance in Europe, but what exactly was it? The Black Death, also known as the Bubonic Plague was a wide spread infection in Medieval Europe that wiped out one third of the entire population during this time period. This plague affected the Lymph Nodes, where the bacteria found a suitable place to reproduce. How was the black plague spread you may ask? This is where some of the advances made in Europe during the Middle Ages, backfired and actually had a negative effect. It is widely known that the Black Plague was transmitted through rats, but it finds in origins in Asia. Thus the fleas found on these rats, must have come to Europe somehow, for this we look at trade routes. It was very common for markets and fairs to open up with imported goods in Europe, some of these goods coming from Asia, thus traveling salesmen and their merchandise are largely responsible for the transmission of the disease. Another reason this disease was so deadly was the lack of medicine, and knowledge of science. Though there was knowledge of science and medicine in the time, it does not compare to what we know now, including the knowledge of incubation periods. We know now because of modern medicine, that diseases can be transmitted before symptoms show, this was not known in M... ...olarly endeavors, rather than strictly practical ones. Humanists also believed that the entirety of society should be well versed and able to speak articulately. The focus also changed during this time period to the â€Å"here and now† rather than the afterlife. The worth of individuals began to become more important, rather than just their worth in relation to society as a whole. Renaissance Humanism was the first time in history that people began to question authority and the teachings they had learned, it was the first time in history that individual expression was commonly accepted. Medieval Europe was a time of great tragedy (The Black Death) but it was also a time of great advancements in learning and culture. Perhaps one day thousands of years from now, people will read of our advancements and note their profound impact, as we do with Europe in the Middle Ages.

Baidu Strategy Essay

On March 9 2011, Baidu announced through Western China City Daily that it has initiated an internal testing of the Baidu browser and would officially launch the browser soon afterwards. Up until now, the strategy of Baidu client end products is becoming clearer and clearer. There is a clear tendency for baidu to become a rival to Tencent in the field of client end products. Baidu browser will be integrated with Baidu application platforms. According to Baidu, Baidu browser Beta 1.0 is the joint effort of Baidu browser department and Baidu search department, integrating Baidu search, Baidu application platforms based on Baidu frame computing strategy. 1. Feature: integrated with Baidu Applications Different from other browsers, Baidu browser Beta 1.0 is fully integrated with Baidu application platforms. Clicking the icons on the left corner of the Baidu browser, the page â€Å"My Baidu Applications† will be automatically applied, showing ordinary applications like music, video, books, game, novels, SNS, shopping, tools and etc. Baidu Browser spokesperson says that by improving its browser, Baidu wishes to accelerate the development of internet, attract more internet users, increase their online survey frequency and duration and eventually develop the search media. 2. Motivation: capture users at the internet portal. In the beginning of 2008, there had been rumors for Baidu to enter the browser market. In July 2010, Baidu officially announced its entering the marketing and planning to put in 5Billion RMB in the following three years. â€Å"Heart of Rock†, an online expert, told Western China City Daisy that the Baidu browser is to capture the online users at their portal to the internet world. Baidu is demonstrating its determination to compete with Tencent in the client-end products. Tianyu, one of the Iresearch analysts, comments that in the short term, it could be integrated with other Baidu applications and client end products to provide a holistic online survey portal to bring more traffic to Baidu search. †also in the long run, Baidu browser is a strategic move for the cloud computing in the future when all the operation systems will be installed in the browser which is the one and only portal for users online. Another thing worth our attention is that one day before the Baidu’s announcement on its browser, Baidu also exposed the Baidu mobile browser with the Chinese name: â€Å"Ã¥ ¤ ©Ã¤ ¹ ¦Ã¥ ·Ã¨ ½ ´Ã¢â‚¬ and a English name: FlyFlow. 3.Result: direct competition with Tencent Besides Baidu Browser Beta 1.0, Baidu also launched â€Å" Baidu Search Tools†, â€Å"Baidu Hi†, â€Å"Baidu Input Method† â€Å"Baidu Computer Organizer† â€Å" Baidu Browser Mate† and recently â€Å"Baidu Player†. All these piece together the Baidu client-end product strategy. Correspondently, along with QQ, Tencent has â€Å"QQ Browser† â€Å"QQ Computer Organizer† â€Å"QQ Input Method† â€Å"QQ Player†. The competition becomes obvious. Experts say there are three giants in Chinese internet world, Tencent, Baidu and Alipay. Alibaba. Baidu has been devoted to search, Tencent to the user end and Alibaba to the e-commerce. The new products are Baidu’s efforts to make up for its deficiency in user end products.

Compound Definition in Chemistry

The word compound has several definitions. In the field of chemistry, compound refers to a chemical compound. Compound Definition A compound is a chemical species that is formed when two or more atoms join together chemically, with covalent or ionic bonds. Compounds may be categorized according to the type of chemical bonds holding the atoms together: Molecules are held together by covalent bonds.Ionic compounds are held together by ionic bonds.Intermetallic compounds are held together by metallic bonds.Complexes are often held together by coordinate covalent bonds. Note that some compounds contain a mixture of ionic and covalent bonds. Also note, a few scientists do not consider pure elemental metals to be compounds (metallic bonds). Examples of Compounds Examples of compounds include table salt or sodium chloride (NaCl, an ionic compound), sucrose (a molecule), nitrogen gas (N2, a covalent molecule), a sample of copper (intermetallic), and water (H2O, a covalent molecule). Examples of chemical species not considered compounds include the hydrogen ion H and the noble gas elements (e.g., argon, neon, helium), which do not readily form chemical bonds. Writing  Compound Formulas By convention, when atoms form a compound, its formula lists the atom(s) acting as a cation first, followed by the atom(s) acting as the anion. This means sometimes an atom may be first or last in a formula. For example, in carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon (C) acts as a cation. In silicon carbide (SiC), carbon acts as the anion. Compound Versus Molecule Sometimes a compound is called a  molecule. Usually, the two terms are synonymous. Some scientists make a distinction between the types of bonds in molecules (covalent) and compounds (ionic).
